Along Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands, farmers grow cacao beneath planted timber and remnant forest trees. The mixed canopy shades pods during hotter periods, while pruning and removal of infected pods are used to limit frosty pod rot, caused by the fungus Moniliophthora roreri.
