Across the Cuvette Centrale in the Republic of the Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo, waterlogged swamp forests have built deep peat from partly decomposed leaves, roots and wood. Raphia palms occupy many wetter areas; drainage or longer dry periods expose peat to oxygen, allowing stored organic matter to decay.
